Professor Beyersdorf is one of the leading experts in the field of cardioplegia, having large experience in laboratory evaluation of various methods of myocardial protection and reperfusion. He is also the Chapter Editor of Myocardial protection in the Multimedia Manual of Cardiothoracic Surgery. During the September 2008 EACTS meeting in Lisbon, we had a chance to ask him several questions about optimal temperature of cardioplegic solutions, about management of body temperature during aortic cross-clamping, about the necessity of reperfusion, his opinion about the optimal myocardial protection in cardiogenic shock, and we wanted to find out if he observed any recent significant breakthroughs in this field.
